A refined and splendid large villa in sleepy Thalpe

Victoria Villa is a spectacular five bedroom property amidst a small coconut plantation in Thalpe, close to Galle. The owners describe the villa's design as “a contemporary interpretation of a traditional Sri Lankan house” and we can only agree. The affect is certainly gorgeous.

The entrance to the brilliant white villa skirts across an ornate lily pond and into the main body of the villa. Inside it is largely open plan in its design. Cool tiled floors surround the property and compliment the soft tones of colour which abound. There is a large sitting area with lots of cushions: perfect for lounging around, reading and watching the days drift by. There is a long, light dining room with a single wooden table suitable for up to ten people. One of several unusual touches in the design is the extensive use of long, wicker blinds around the property which can be lowered or raised as you chose, creating a markedly different atmosphere with shades of light.

The five bedrooms are varied in shape and form. The master bedroom has an attached dressing area and large en-suite bathroom. All rooms are fitted with antique doors and furniture. There are three double rooms and one twin room. These rooms share two bathrooms which are located between them on each side, effectively being en-suite. All rooms have four poster beds with fitted mosquito nets. Each bedroom also has a garden courtyard or access to the landscaped gardens.

The excellent swimming pool is located in the centre of the garden, affording views back to the villa or out across the ocean. At the foot of the garden is small pavilion, positioned perfectly for a breezy breakfast tea or sunset cocktail. Great also for observing the beach below or simply taking the snooze on the comfy cushions that the shade and breeze often prompt!

Staff are permanently on hand to look after your needs. Meals are excellent and prepared to your choice. The chef will go to the market daily and pick up the freshest local produce after discussing your choices for the day in the morning.

Worth bearing in mind that swimming is not possible on the beach immediately in front of the villa due to sharp rocks. However, there are some year round swimming bays nearby.

Larger than most private villas on the south coast, Victoria offers a great option for a group of friends as there is ample private space for each guest as well as refined, comfortable and captivating communal areas.
