Wasgomuwa National Park

Wasgomuwa is one of the least visited and most un-spoilt of Sri Lanka’s national parks. Established in 1984 to protect wildlife displaced by forest clearance, this park is enclosed and protected by two mighty rivers which flank its borders: the Amban Ganga to the east and The Mahaweli Ganga to the west.

The park covers the northeaster reach of the hill country, so ranges in elevation from 500m to just over 76m by the Mahaweli Ganga. This produces a stunningly diverse scenic effect for the visitor. The majority of the park is comprises dry zone evergreen forest along the main rivers which opens out onto plains in the centre and lusher vegetation as you climb into the lower hills.

There are 23 species of mammals in the park, including around 150 elephants and the odd leopard and bear. There are fishing cats, sambur, spotted deer and wild buffalo too. There are 143 bird species in the park, including 8 endemics, with the comical stork – the Lesser Adjutant being a particular favourite. The amphibians and reptiles like the sinister crocodile and several other interesting species, complete the picture.

With many small scale ancient tanks and several other ruins and ancient religious sites the park also has significant historical importance.

The remote nature of the park makes it perfect for a camping safari with the Mahoora Luxury and Mahoora Standard camps.

When you wake in the park you will have it all to yourself – and it is a truly magical experience. We can organize fantastic one and two day camping safaris in the park. We can also organize morning or afternoon safari drives into Wasgomuwa – as a day trip from Kandy or the cultural triangle. Please contact us to find out more.
