Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, Kandy

Established in 1975 by the Department of Wildlife Conservation, the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage aims to provide care and protection to the many orphaned and abandoned elephants found in the jungle. Other than twice daily baths in the river and bottle feeding of the calves younger than three years old, the orphanage tries to simulate the elephants natural environment as much as possible.

Within easy reach of Kandy, a visit to Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage would suit those who want to get up close with these large pachyderms. The main attraction is the opportunity to observe the elephants bathing from the broad river bank, watching as the herd interact with one another, playing in the river. It is also possible to view other aspects of the elephants care such as bottle feeding of elephant calves and feeding of all other elephants.

A visit to Pinnawala makes a great day trip from Kandy providing a rare opportunity to observe these glorious animals on foot.
