This fantastic tour covers much of the island - taking in the ancient cities, the hill country and a beach stay. Transport is with your own chauffeur-guided van, whom will remain with you for most of the tour. You can use the vehicle to go on as many day trips and excursions as you wish.

The accommodation is super family friendly – these hotels have family rooms, inter-connecting rooms and cottages and villas all to yourself. This minimises costs and maximises value, as well as providing safe and friendly environment for the children.

We find holidays such as these hugely successful in providing a mixture of quality family time, positive learning experiences and something for everyone, from shopping in Colombo for elder teenagers, to relaxing beach time for exhausted parents, outdoor adventure for active kids and elephants up close and personal for everyone.

DAY 1

Depart London Heathrow for Colombo, Sri Lanka.

DAYS 2 & 3

Arrive in Colombo and be met by your chauffeur-guide and private mini-van. Head to Horathapola Estate. Consisting of four bedrooms in idyllic surroundings, this is perhaps our favourite hotel in Sri Lanka, providing a relaxed start to the tour, enjoying the peace and tranquillity of this exceptional place. The hotel has a great pool and a rambling estate for the children to explore with a lovely 2 bedroom family suite.

DAYS 4, 5 & 6

Three days to explore the majestic ancient cities of Anuradhapura & Polonnaruwa, the UNESCO world heritage site at Sigiriya - a towering rock fortress with a fascinating history that is often proclaimed as the eighth wonder of the world. The ancient cave temples at Dambulla are also well worth a visit. Entrance tickets are included in the price. The tour also includes a great afternoon safari in Minneriya National Park and an Elephant ride in Habarana. Stay at the Chaaya Village on a half board basis, ideally located for exploring the sites and one of the few boutique hotels in the area.

DAYS 7 & 8

Two days to explore cultural Kandy with relaxed visits to the Temple of the Tooth”, Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage, and Peradiniya Botanical Gardens and a cultural dance evening. Kandy is a great place to explore on foot. There is a decent selection of restaurants, shops and things to see. The hotel, with the spectacular view of the Mahaweli River, is an attraction in itself. With first rate service and a friendly, relaxed atmosphere, Villa Rosa can count itself amongst the very best there is on offer in this historic city. A 2 bed room family suite on a bed and breakfast basis ensures peace and comfort!

DAYS 9 & 10

Drive through the tea covered hills to the wonderfully scenic town of Haputale. Stay in Kelburne Cottages - a selection of charming bungalows formerly belonging to the manager of the tea estate. Walk in the mountains, visit tea factories, explore the picturesque towns of Bandarawela, Badulla and Haputale. We include a walk to Lipton's Seat, an exciting stroll through the plantations to reveal, on a clear day at least, one of the country's finest possible views.

DAYS 11 - 12

From Haputale take a picturesque train journey to Ella where your driver will be waiting you. The journey is one of the most beautiful stretches of railway in Sri Lanka. It's only a short journey of less than an hour and the track runs along the southern edge of the hill country, giving you majestic vistas on either side as you trundle along. From Ella, head to the deep south-east and Yala National Park. Stay at the Hibiscus Garden Hotel. We include an afternoon safari in the price (includes jeep, entrance tickets, tracker & guide) (2 nights, half board)

DAYS 13, 14 & 15

Drop down to the coast and spend three nights in the gorgeous villa, South Point Abbey. This fully staffed villa is ideally set up for small families. Beautifully furnished but not preciously, this villa is set up with children in mind and all the staff have great experience with them. The cook will make food to order and to satisfy the most demanding palettes.

DAY 16

Head north up the coast for your final night at the tranquil The Hideaway, a lovely villa situated in a pineapple plantation.

Your driver will drop you at Colombo airport for your return flight to London.
