Day-to-Day Itinerary : Family Adventure
DAY 1
Depart London Heathrow for Colombo, Sri Lanka
DAYS 2 & 3
You will be met at the airport and transferred to The Mudhouse where you will stay for two nights on a half board basis providing an extraordinary start at a wonderful place. There are lots of fantastic local excursions from here swimming in local lakes, peaceful rock temples and much more. Enjoy your unique accommodation and special hospitality in the most beautiful and wild surroundings.
DAYS 4, 5 & 6
You will be met this morning by your qualified and friendly chauffeur-guide and modern mini-van, which will stay with you for the rest of the trip.
Your driver will take you to your next stop, the Back of Beyond Dehi Gaha Ela. This unique eco retreat is situated in dense forest with a variety of accommodation from tree-houses to rock cottages. The property is a great base for the man-made wonders of the cultural triangle. We include guided visits to Sigirya Rock Fortress, Polonnaruwa and the Dambulla cave temples. We also include an afternoon safari in Minneriya National Park (where in the months around August it is possible to witness the incredible Gathering of the Elephants') and an elephant back ride.
DAYS 7 & 8
Leave your driver and vehicle behind at the point the road ends and join your local guide for the 4 hour trek to The Abode where you will stay for two nights and a wonderful adventure. The accommodation is extremely basic so be warned though the warmth and hospitality of the villagers is a joy. This experience will either be a one of the best things you have ever done or it is not for you. There is very little middle ground as enjoyment requires full participation and enthusiasm. We have heard of the most jaded western teenagers undergoing amazing transformations here.
DAYS 9 & 10
Onto Kithugalla, the venue for your white water rafting, canyoning and a jungle trek. The River Resort, where you will stay for two nights on a bed and breakfast basis, is one of the quirkiest hotels in Sri Lanka, nestled on the banks of a waterfall. The hotel is basic, the service is inconsistent but friendly and all in all this is a very unusual place to stay. The rushing waters outside supply all the electricity to the hotel and the village around it - and also a constant noisy soundtrack. The jungle surrounds the hotel and the staff will happily take you for walks locally to nearby waterfalls.
DAYS 11 & 12
From Kitulgala head east across the mountains to Belihul Oya and the River Garden resort and camp. The River Garden activity centre is a fantastic base for a wide range of nature and adventure related activities. Try anything from trekking across the Horton Plains (the Horton Plains mountain range is visible from the River Garden restaurant itself) to canoeing in the 'Samanalawewa' reservoir. Bicycling, caving, trekking and bird watching are all organised from here. It is a wonderfully laid back and scenic location too and all the accommodations options, from the cottages to the camping are well organised and great fun. We include a visit to Horton Plains.
DAYS 13 & 14
Head south to the remote corner of Yala and the vast Yala National Park. The drive out of the mountains is spectacular as you travel through varying scenery back into the plains of the south. We include a safari in Yala National Park with jeep, tracker and guide. You will stay at Hibiscus Garden Hotel for two nights on a half board basis.
DAYS 15, 16 & 17
From Yala we head to the sleepy coastal village of Kahandamodera, home to the fantastic eco villa of Back Of Beyond where you will have three nights to relax and explore at leisure. The nearby beaches of Tengalle are well worth a visit too and you may be lucky enough to witness the turtles laying their eggs on the beach.
DAY 18
Transfer to Colombo and the Galle Face Regency Hotel for your last night. Catch up on some fine dining in some of the city's great restaurants, soak up the atmosphere or do some last minute shopping.
DAY 19
Transfer to Colombo airport for your return flight to London.
