Day-to-Day Itinerary : Sri Lanka's North & East

DAY 1 - DEPART LONDON

Depart London Heathrow for Colombo, Sri Lanka.

DAYS 2, 3 & 4

You will be met at the airport and transferred to The Mudhouse. This little visited but beautiful area of Sri Lanka is deeply rural and life moves at a tranquil pace. Located in the heart of Sri Lanka's 'dry zone' it is characterised by startling rock formations and scattered 'tanks' - village reservoirs which have provided the means for agriculture for thousands of years and continue to do so in the present day. The rustic charm of the Mudhouse's design complements the warm and friendly hospitality of the staff. Three days to relax into Sri Lanka and enjoy the many excursions and activities offered.

DAYS 5, 6 & 7

From the Mudhouse you will be picked up by your chauffeur-guide and vehicle. From here you head north, through Wilpattu National Park, to the island of Mannar. Situated in the remote fishing village of Pesalai on the Mannar peninsula, Abode Hibernation provides visitors with a wonderful insight into the way of life and cultural heritage of this Christian Tamil part of Northern Sri Lanka. You will be picked up by your expert guide who runs this homestay style project and will then explore this little visited section of the north west coast. You will spend time with the locals, have invigorating well showers and eat the freshest fish on a deserted stretch of beach. All transport is included in the price. Do be warned that the accommodation and facilities are basic but the whole point of your stay here is to embrace and experience the local way of life with your charming and fascinating guide.

DAYS 8, 9, 10 & 11

From Mannar we drive across the northern strip of the island to the eastern town of Trincomalee, stopping en-route for an afternoon picnic on Pulmoddai Beach. Nilaveli Beach is one of the finest in Sri Lanka and the Beach Hotel is something of an institution there. The east coast of Sri Lanka is back on the tourist trail after many years and the Nilaveli Beach Hotel is one of the best places to experience it. The hotel is circa thirty years old now but was refurbished in 2008. There are few coastal locations to rival the Nilaveli Beach hotel. Nearby Trincomalee town, with its mix of cultures and spectacular natural harbour provides many an opportunity to explore. We include a half day tour of Trincomalee fort, harbour and the spectacular cliff-top Hindu temple of Koneswaram.

DAYS 12, 13 & 14

Heading south west from Trincomalee you arrive in the north-central province and the 'cultural triangle'. Your base here is the truly unique and original Back Of Beyond. During the time here we include an afternoon safari in Minneriya National Park and an elephant back ride at Habarana. We also include guided visits to the ancient historical sites of Sigiriya Rock Fortress, Polonnaruwa and Dambulla Cave Temples.

DAY 15

From the cultural triangle, drive back to the west coast and the beach town of Negombo for your final night at the Suriya Arana. Your driver will drop you here and you will have a last chance to savour the seafood dishes or do a spot of shopping in the markets.
