Day-to-Day Itinerary : The Full Sri Lanka Tour

DAY 1

Depart London Heathrow for Colombo, Sri Lanka.

DAYS 2 & 3

Arriving in Colombo, you will be met by your chauffeur-guide and private car who will transfer you to The Mudhouse for a two night stay on a full board basis and remain with you until you reach your beach hotel. Locally guided excursions are included such as bicycling, visits to local temples, swimming trips, lake kayaking and picnics. This little visited but beautiful area of Sri Lanka is deeply rural and life moves at a tranquil pace.

Dining under the stars at this stunning eco-retreat you will be immersed in the vibrant colour of Sri Lanka's natural beauty from the start.

DAYS 4, 5 & 6

You will be driven from The Mudhouse to The Chaaya Village in the Cultural Triangle, visiting Sigiriya Rock Fortress en route. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is proudly proclaimed by locals as the Eighth Wonder of the World and is a testament to the extraordinary engineering prowess of the inhabitants of Sri Lanka 1500 years ago.

Over the next few days, explore the ancient cities of Pollonaruwa and Anuhadhapura as well as enjoying a half day safari drive into Minneriya National Park. The park is famous for a phenomenon known as The Gathering, a congregation of Asian elephants in late August, early September that is thought to be the largest grouping in these species in the world.

DAYS 7 & 8

From the Cultural Triangle, you will head to the cooler yet equally cultured climes of Kandy. Staying two nights at the wonderfully positioned Ellerton, you will be perfectly based to visit Peradeniya Botanical Gardens, as well as the sacred Temple of the Tooth.

Built over 100 years ago for the manager of a major tea estate, Ellerton is now a lovely and friendly small hotel, run by an English couple with deep connections to Sri Lanka. The location just on the outskirts of Kandy means that you get the peace and tranquillity of the tea estates whilst still being close enough to visit the sights of Kandy.

DAYS 9 & 10

Drive through the tea covered hills to the wonderfully scenic town of Haputale staying in the Kelburne Cottages, which afford one of the finest views in the country. Walk in the mountains, visit tea factories, explore the other picturesque towns of Bandarawela, Badulla and Haputale. Alternatively, stroll in the grounds of the bungalow or relax on the lawn and enjoy the fresh, mountain air. From Haputale, enjoy a scenic train journey to Ella, covering one of the most beautiful stretched of railway in Sri Lanka, giving you majestic vistas on either side as you trundle along.

DAY 11

Head south to Yala National Park, staying in the Hibiscus Garden Hotel. Included is an afternoon safari in the vast Yala jungles, the area with the highest density of leopards in Asia.

DAYS 12 & 13

Head along the coast to sleepy Rekawa located on the outskirts of Tengalle. Enjoy fine accommodation, sensational food and a relaxing atmosphere at Buckingham Place, one of the south coast's hottest properties. Spend the afternoon wandering around Galle Fort during a private tour.

DAYS 14 & 15

Drive along the south coast to Galle for a two nights stay at the Galle Fort Hotel on a bed and breakfast basis. Located right in the centre of the historic Dutch Fort, and set inside a beautifully restored seventeenth-century villa, the hotel has a great reputation for fine food. You are free to explore the town and fort here at your leisure.

DAYS 16, 17, 18, 19 & 20

A short drive north from Galle will bring you to the long, sweeping beaches of Bentota. Club Villa is a delightful boutique hotel with superb rooms, excellent food and an atmosphere of tranquillity. For the active types, Bentota also offers plenty of optional excursions, most notably water-sports. Scuba diving, wind-surfing & jet skiing are some of the more popular. For those who just want to relax there are five nights of total comfort and luxury.

DAY 21

Transfer to Colombo for your final night, staying in the legendary Galle Face Regency Hotel.

DAY 22

Transfer to the airport for your return flight to London.
