Alankuda,
Kalpitya
Sri Lanka, Cultural Triangle
Info : Alankuda
Alankuda is an exciting development on the deserted and pristine Kalpitya peninsula which stretches out into the Indian Ocean from Puttalam.
Alankuda is actually a collection of small, independent properties and resorts built next door to each other which share facilities and staff. This is an unusual concept and one which adds to the uniqueness and appeal.
The 'Bar Reef Resort' was the initial development and consists of a variety of open-planned wattle and daub villas with thatched roofs. The villas have king size beds and large lounge areas with sofas that can easily convert into comfortable beds by night, allowing each to sleep up to four people. Each villa has a large private garden with extravagant bathrooms crafted from natural fencing and high pressure showers incorporated into swaying palm trees. Two separate double-roomed cottages offer similar facilities and are more suited to families or small groups. A stunning turquoise infinity pool is the centre of Bar Reef Resort and an ideal place to while away the days. The pool is flanked by three thatched 'Ambalama' huts where meals can also be taken. The Bar Reef resort serves traditional Sri Lankan cuisine.
'Palagama Beach' is a collection of charming wooden cabanas and simple, contemporary villas. Set around spacious grounds, Palagama beach also has a great swimming pool and a restaurant serving excellent western cuisine.
'Khomba House' is a private two-bedroom villa. Comprised of two separate large double bedrooms, with their own en-suite facilities, Khomba House is ideal for couples or families. The villa, set 150 metres back from the waters edge, is designed on an open plan basis with high ceilings, fans, polished floors and overhanging eaves in order to enjoy the cool ocean breeze while also bathing in the glorious temperate light.
The azure, warm sea is almost always calm and welcoming during the months of November to April. Alankuda has one more unique attraction - Dolphins. Dolphin watching trips which skirt the stunning peninsula in search of these majestic creatures can be organised daily during the season. On a good day it is not uncommon to see hundreds frolicking in the seas. Whales have also been spotted. In addition there is also kayaking, canoeing, sailing, kite and wind surfing.
Rating
Eco/Outdoors/Homestay - This category covers gorgeous eco lodges in the jungle, comfortable safari camps, very basic homestays and dreamy, but simple, beach cabanas. These places defy conventional categorisation: what is communing with nature to one person may be terrifying bugs to another! Many of these places are very comfortable and the service generally of a very high level – but a guest staying at any place in this categorisation must read the website review carefully and/or talk to us and be sure to have understood what they are letting themselves in for!
