Tamarind Hill, a beautifully restored 19th century manor house and now boutique hotel, sits majestically perched above a hilltop on the outskirts of Galle. Opened in 2008, the property was part of the Taru Villas chain, now known as Anilana.

The hotels 12 rooms are split onto four categories; standard, superior, deluxe and suite. All are designed and finished to top period standards, with four-poster beds, luxurious en-suite bathrooms and plenty of storage and lounge space. Each room is air-conditioned and comes with a full range of dvd/tv entertainment options.

The in-house restaurant serves a variety of Sri Lankan and Thai cuisine to a very high standard. The main bar serves a range of cocktails and wines and is a lovely place to relax in the evening or make new friends over drinks and dinner. The delightful swimming pool, with its views over lush gardens and countryside, is one of the highlights of the hotel. As with all Anilana properties, the service is professional and swift.

Tamarind Hill is located just north of Galle town. A short stroll or tuk-tuk ride away is the old dutch fort and the superb beaches of Unawatuna and Thalpe. Galle itself has a vibrant social scene, with a great choice of restaurants, cafes, galleries and bars. Tamarind Hill is, without doubt, one of the best boutique hotels in the area.

Superior - This is our first really 'upmarket' category. It might be a beautiful tiny hotel with very limited facilities or a 5* resort hotel with all the trimmings; but any hotel in this category will be a well-run establishment with very comfortable rooms, a strong service ethos and excellent food.
