Thotalangala Bungalow, tea planter Thomas Liptons former home, sits perched on the hills of a Haputale tea estate. From the immaculate garden it is often possible to see as far as the south coast over and beyond the rolling hills and Uda Walawa National Park.

Mr Lipton himself stares out of a portrait hung above the fireplace on the living room wall and it is easy to feel you are living in a bygone age here. Many of the fittings and furnishings are antique and remain a testament to the British period when the bungalow was constructed the large polished wooden dining table, antiquated sofas in the lounge or original bathtubs & sinks, are all relics of that period. Although ageing, the bungalow retains a degree of charm. Essentially very simple in decoration, it is cosy and spacious with five large bedrooms, two living rooms and a dining room. The bathrooms are slightly worn. The garden is the real piece de resistance here though. With a well kept lawn, small swimming pool and excellently tendered flower gardens, you really could spend all day here.

Ideal for families or small groups, the bungalow sleeps up to 10 adults and is booked in its entirety, giving you freedom and privacy simultaneously. Rooms cannot be booked individually. The helpful staff will see to your needs and arrange meals to your taste. There are many great walks in the area, the most popular being the climb in the footsteps of the previous occupant, from the Dambatenne Tea factory to Liptons Seat, with its breathtaking panoramic views.

Please bear in mind that this bungalow is far less luxurious and less well kept up than those at Tea Trails, Netherbyres, Kirchyan or Bonnieland.

Comfort - This is what we would describe as our standard category. These will be decent 3/4* hotels providing a really good level of service. We would generally expect them to be providing a little something extra, whether it is character, service or excellent facilities.
