Day-to-Day Itinerary : Deluxe Sri Lanka Holiday

DAY 1

Depart London Heathrow for Colombo - a direct flight with Sri Lankan Airlines (indirect flights available from other UK airports).

DAY 2

You will be met at the airport by your qualified chauffeur-guide and modern, air-conditioned car. Your chauffeur-guide will stay with you until dropping you at the beach towards the end of the trip. The Wallawwe is an airport hotel with a difference. A converted ancestral manor house this is a seriously beautiful place to arrive to. The food is fantastic too. A great place to unwind after the flight and ease your way into Sri Lanka. (1 night, B&B)

DAYS 3, 4 & 5

From The Wallawe you are driven north to the Cultural Triangle and home of Sri Lanka's ancient cities and historical sites. On the first day here we take an afternoon safari in Minneriya National Park, where you may be lucky enough to see vast herds of elephants as a well as other flora and fauna. The second day will be spent exploring the Unesco world heritage sites of Sigiriya Rock Fortress and Polonnaruwa. The final day will be spent exploring the sprawling remains of the ancient city of Anuradhapura, which was then the world's most advanced civilisation and is arguably on a par with Egypt's pyramids. Your time in this region will be spent staying at Geoffrey Bawas architectural masterpiece, The Kandalama. The deluxe rooms have magnificent views of the Kandalama Lake and Sigiriya in the distance.

DAYS 6 & 7 - THE KANDY HOUSE, KANDY

Departing the Kandalama, we visit the Dambulla Cave Temples en-route to Kandy, the cultural capital of Sri Lanka. Arrive and check into The Kandy House, a superb boutique hotel about 30 minutes outside the city. With stunning architecture, stylish rooms and delightful gardens, The Kandy House has a real 'wow' factor. In the evening we visit the city to enjoy a traditional Kandyan dance performance. Our second day in Kandy is a relaxed one, taking in a visit to the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens and the famous Temple Of The Tooth with plenty of free time to wander around Kandy or relax at the hotel.

DAYS 8, 9 & 10

Leaving Kandy you take the scenic train to Hatton in the First Class Observation Carriage (not as luxurious as it sounds but great fun nonetheless!) This journey is considered to be one of Asia's great train rides with spectacular views throughout. Your driver will be waiting for you at Hatton station to drop you at Tea Trails, a hotel that has been wowing guests for a number of years now and is generally considered to be the finest in Sri Lanka. Aside from relaxing into the life of the Colonial Planter (minus the hard work!), there are activities available from the excellent tea tour to water-sports on the lake, hiking, climbing Adam's Peak and white water rafting on the nearby Kelani River. These can be arranged by the excellent hotel staff.

DAYS 11, 12, 13, 14 & 15

Following two indulgent and relaxing days in the mountains we head south-west for the beach part of the tour, where your chauffeur-guide will drop you. Stay at Aditya, one of Experience Travels absolute favourite beach hotels. The 12 suites are all replete with private plunge pools and a huge amount of space. The hotel is all about peace and privacy for its guests and it rests unobtrusively on the edge of the Indian Ocean. The lovely stretch of beach outside is complemented by a fantastic pool and the Aditya restaurant has a great reputation. Galle is a 15 minute drive from the hotel, providing entertainment and dining options both day and night. (5 nights, Seaview Suite, Bed and Breakfast)

DAY 16

Transfer from Aditya to Koggala airport, located just east of Galle. From here take the Sri Lankan Airlines Air Taxi to Colombo. The low-altitude flight offers great views on clear days of the mountains on one side and the Indian Ocean on the other. A memorable finish to your holiday. Land at Colombo and check in for your return flight to London.
