Guests come to Soneva Gili for the ultimate in couple escapism. The Soneva Company has done wonders with this small island, by concentrating on the resource most readily available: water! It is everywhere - flowing around the bedrooms, through the bathrooms and surrounding you wherever you look.

The bungalows are unobtrusive natural affairs from the outside a jumble of cajun towers, local thatch and wood. Inside, they are magnificent... The sumptuous bedrooms offer views out across the water as does the large living area and the bath. This is supplemented with a sun deck and private plunge pool, a roof terrace or garden, complete with a day bed offering another place to sleep out under the stars. Meals can be served up here if you wish.

The extra luxurious comforts are all here, although in keeping with the Soneva concept of intelligent luxury the ipods, sound systems and flat-screens are discreetly tucked away. The rooms come equipped with bicycles. Although the island is not large, these are a nice touch and they help maintain the languid island pace.

A unique feature of the Soneva Gili bungalows is the natural bathrooms. Steps lead down into the sea for a sea bath, allowing guests a naked dip in privacy as well as providing a graceful, peaceful effect while showering as the fishes meander past below.

The difference between the Lagoon and Ocean bungalows is in the detail: the Lagoon bungalows have a living area open to the elements, while the Ocean Bungalows are AC although of course have large doors that open out. For the penultimate in desert island escapism, the Crusoe Residences can only be reached by boat and for the ultimate The Villa Residence is the largest over-water villa in the world and yours at $10,000 a night.

Soneva Gili provides barefoot luxury par excellence. You can leave your shoes as you step off the launch after your comfortable ride from Male and not need them until you leave. You can pad around in shorts or a sarong and never feel anything less than comfortable while the service is smiling, relaxed and efficient, with a butler assigned to each guest. The resort is there for you there is no reception and formalities are handled once you have settled in. Similarly, eating is as you like, when you like. The Six Sense Spa is there for you too and offers pure indulgence.
