Horathapola Coconut Estate,

Info : Horathapola Coconut Estate
Set amid a working coconut estate, Horothapola is truly wonderful hotel. Only an hour from the airport, but as remote and far away from the sights and smells of town as you could possibly wish. Relaxing in the garden, enjoying the soft peaceful atmosphere; swimming in the lush pool; whiling away the evening in the Jacuzzi; enjoying a drink on your veranda or exploring the coconut estate; there is everything and nothing to do here.
The estate was the Fernando family home and Javana Fernando converted it into a small hotel. The gorgeous antique furniture and polished wooden floors retain an elegant family feel. The four bedrooms in the house are huge and spacious, allowing the air to flow freely. The beds are wonderfully large and welcoming. All rooms open out to their own outside sitting area explaining the feeling of space and comfort prevailing. One of the rooms has a smaller twin room attached for families. Next to the main house is Pokuna Camare - with large verandas looking out over the pool. Set back a 2 minute stroll away is the family lodge with 2 bedrooms, a roof terrace and a large veranda.
The service in the hotel is attentive, but unobtrusive. The Sri Lankan rice and curry is excellent whilst simple western dishes are also prepared to a very good standard. There is something distinctively Sri Lankan about this laid back hospitality, something which is often lost in the rush to supply every western need in some of the islands other hotels.
The garden and estate is an absolute paradise and a nature guide had recently listed in the guestbook, 37 different bird species spotted on one morning stroll. There are excursions that they offer in the area, if you can tear yourself away, and they are happy to show you around the estate, by bullock cart, if you like! Horathapola is a ideal place to begin or end a visit to Sri Lanka.

Superior - This is our first really 'upmarket' category. It might be a beautiful tiny hotel with very limited facilities or a 5* resort hotel with all the trimmings; but any hotel in this category will be a well-run establishment with very comfortable rooms, a strong service ethos and excellent food.

Guest Comments for Horathapola Coconut Estate
Horathapolawas very pleasant environmentally and the ethos perfect. The food was some of the best and authentic we thought. It was nice to have no choice and feel that the stay was less formal.

Good personal service at Horathapola, and very interesting and good food. Great for our first two nights. For our day at leisure we sat by the pool and did nothing more exhausting than a bullock cart ride.

Horthopola - Lovely estate, brilliant food and fantastic staff - good way to get used to temperature and time zone - oxen ride a bonus

Horathapola Estate was a great place to spend our first two nights

Friendly and efficient service, great room, welcoming owner and excellent food. Pity we only had time to spend 1 night there, but even within our short stay one of the staff gave us an excellent tour of the local village.
Brindley, Feb 2011
what a great place to start. We had it all to ourselves for 24hrs and were treated like royalty. We were taken on a tour of the village in the morning and the paddy fields at night - great introduction to the culture and wildlife. For anyone visiting - the endless, very bumpy road to it is worth it! Wish we had booked another night as one full day enjoying the grounds, pool and fantastic hospitality wasn't long enough.

We loved Horothapola where we stayed for the first two nights - very peaceful and relaxing and delicious food.

Horathapola estate was just beautiful and a great place to recover from the flight, although the beds were a bit hard! The food here was superb
