Info : The Mudhouse

Surrounded by lakes a nestled in sixty acres of forest at the foot of the mysterious Paramakanda Rock Temple lies The Mudhouse - a stunning jungle lodge that combines charming and adventurous accommodation with a great range of off-the-beaten track excursions.

Accommodation is in a variety of uniquely designed, thatched huts built entirely from natural materials that blend harmoniously into the idyllic natural environment. Guests receive their own private village in the jungle with a selection of huts for sleeping, dining and lazing. There are three guest areas and you are guaranteed total privacy.

To stay here is to get a glimpse of real life in rural Sri Lanka, to live amongst nature whilst having your small creature comforts subtly taken care of. All huts have a selection of double beds, en-suite western toilets and outdoor jungle showers. This is refined simplicity, with beautiful attention to detail and an overall atmosphere of peace and calm. Night times are magical, with lighting provided by kerosene lamps and candles.

You can choose to do as much or as little as you like when staying at The Mudhouse. Beyond relaxing in the comfort of your huts and hammocks there is a wide range of interesting and exciting local excursions and activities. Swim and kayak in local lakes, climb ancient rock temples, cycle on jungle trails, learn to cook Sri Lankan food and enjoy picnics in a plethora of picturesque natural settings.

The Mudhouse is is sold on Full Board basis and a hearty range of organic and healthy Sri Lankan cuisine is served with much of the produce grown on site. The service is low-key, friendly and exudes the genuine and humble hospitality that rural Sri Lanka is famous for. All local excursions and activities are also included in the price.

One of the major attraction of The Mudhouse is the wildlife and your proximity to it. This is a real haven for birds (binoculars and telescopes are provided) and many of the island's amazing fauna can also be spotted.

The Mudhouse makes a great base for longer trips around Puttalam District to various bird sanctuaries, ancient capitals, beaches and the enormous Wipattu National Park. A stay here fits conveniently into itineraries on the way to or from the 'cultural triangle'.

Ideal for couples, families (kids love it) and small groups of friends The Mudhouse is place to connect with both nature and people.. Romantic, private and fun in equal measure this is one of the most unusual and enchanting places to stay in the country.

These places defy conventional categorisation: what is communing with nature to one person may be terrifying bugs to another! Guest Comments for The Mudhouse

The Mud House exceeded expectations - it was wonderful and very special experience. Best food of the trip -unusual, varied and tasty.

The Mud House - Brilliant such an experience, comfortable, friendly staff an amazing place

In many ways the Mudhouse was my favourite location. It was certainly the most interesting place I have ever stayed and a real experience. It really is back to nature so forget it if you are at all worried about frogs under the toilet seat or lizards in the shower. Kumar and the staff were great and could not have made us feel more welcome. Food was very good and the chef was good fun and deserves special praise. So eager to help with anything we showed an interest in we had quite a pile of reference books to return when we left. Clearly (although we found the nature around the tank interesting) there is a limit to the things in the locality for the general visitor but the Mudhouse have certainly made the best of what they have (Cookery lessons, Local temple, swimming in the tank etc).

Mudhouse was a great experience, really rustic and different - we loved the bike ride to the temple and kayaking. The treehouse was a real experience - our host Channa was lovely and we were so well looked after - bush walks and cookery lessons - felt very remote and lots of noises at night (not for the faint hearted!)

The Mudhouse was great. We were looked after so well, particular mention to Douglas who would appear early morning with a delicious pot of Ceylon tea. We will always remember his early morning nature walk. We had some fabulous food - loved the cashew nut curry! June 2011

We also loved THE MUD HOUSE and can't say enough wonderful things about Tom and Kumar. Tom was lovely and really went out of his way to make our stay as enjoyable as possible and Kumar is the happiest person we've ever met! It was a magical place with lovely people and a great way to end our holiday

The Mud House was outstanding, everything we were expecting after looking on the website and no surprises (this could be a little much for some people!). It is an experience we will never forget. The staff there were very attentive and food excellent and authentic. We were taken out for many trips for no extra charge and there were lots of special simplistic touches they gave us like sitting around the bonfire at night on crickety old chairs.

the Mudhouse was a real experience

mudhouse we loved and we think on balance was where we had the best food .
